Bases to Establish a Real Civilization
(Friday Speech was delivered by Imam Mohamed Baianonie at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, N. C., on November 13, 1987)

One of the greatness of the Noble Qur’an every time you recite it and understand it properly, you will find many wisdoms and important lessons which is the base for goodness of this life on this earth. And without receiving these wisdoms great lessons the man will be at lost and destroyed, and there is no wonder of that. Allah therefore of His wisdom and mercy sent down the Noble Qur’an to be the best guidance and enlightenment for all issues of life big or small. Allah says describing the Noble Qur’an, "Verely, This Qur’an guides to that which is the best." {Surat Al-Isra’, 9}

Here we have great responsibility "We the Ummah of the Qur’an" after we believe in it to recite it properly, to understand the meaning deeply and correctly, get out of it the wisdom and the rules to implement in all our of life, and also to carry this guidance toward Non-Muslims, giving them solutions for all human problems and difficulties from the only one source the Book of Allah, that He had sent it down to cure them of illnesses and diseases.

Today we will study one verse from the verses of the Noble Qur’an we will recite it, understand it, and discover wisdoms and greatness may will bring us guidance and happiness.

Allah (S.W.T.) says in Surat An-Nisaa, (verse one), what can be translated as, "O Mankind! Be Dutiful to your Lord, who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve), and from them both He scattered many men and women and fear Allah through whom you demand your mutual rights reverence and the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is ever All-watcher over you."

In this verse, Allah (S.W.T.) reminds all people "O Mankind!" believers and disbelivers, in the past and present with certain facts. If people understand these facts, they will make significant changes in their lives, and will save them from ignorance, to faith and guidance. Thereupon they will be able to establish the real civilization that is suitable for mankind.

  • The first fact: The creator is Allah

"Your Lord, who created you." Mankind came to this world, where they had never been before. We did not come to it according to our own will, as we were not able to decide for ourselves at that time. It was the will of Allah (S.W.T.) that brought us and gave us our characteristics and talents, Allah (S.W.T.) alone created us, and He is the only one who knows our characteristics and talents.

Allah (S.W.T.) says in Surat Al-Mulk, (Verse 14), what can be translated as, "Should not He who has created know? And He is the most kind and courteous (to His slaves) All-Aware (of everything)." Allah (S.W.T.) is the only one who knows what will benefit us and what will harm us, and He is the only one who has the, right to legislate for us, Allah (S.W.T.) says in Surat Al-A'raf, (verse 54), what can be translated as, "…Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment…"

This divine legislation will guarantee us happiness in our lives and the Hereafter. If people could understand this fact, we would not be try to practice these manmade legislation, that have brought to us many disasters, which we still suffer from till these days, and they will stay unstable and have problems until they return to the legislation of Allah (S.W.T.) who created us.

  • The second fact: Allah has created mankind from a single person

"Who created you from a single person." This person is Adam the father of all mankind. If people could understand this fact, our differences and disagreements that have appeared among us lately, would all diminish. These differences scattered the members of those in the same family. If this fact was clearly understood by people, we would be able to avoid these racial conflicts that discriminate between people based on their colors, races, or languages. This is what mankind has suffered allot and still suffering from. The racial discrimination is a shame on mankind, and a sign of the gap between us and the legislation of their Creator.

If this fact "The single origin" was clearly understood by mankind, then we would have avoided the practice of slavery. Which was present in different places and times. Also to stay away from adopting a cast system such as the upper and lower castes, which is still practiced in India. If the fact "The single origin" was clearly understood by mankind, it would have avoided the racial conflict that caused too much bloodshed like those in the communist countries and avoided the Racism which is a cause of many hate crimes in this country.

The Messenger Muhammad (S.A.W.) assured this fact in many Ahdith, one of which, was reported by Imams Ahmad and Al-Bayhaqy, that the Messenger Mohammed (S.A.W.) said, "O people, your Lord is one, your father is one. There is no grace for Arabs more than Non-Arabs, nor for Non-Arabs than Arab, nor for red than black, nor for black than red, except in taqwa of Allah, and the best of you is the one who fears Allah the most."

  • The third fact: The woman is a part of the man

"and from him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve)." If mankind could grasp this fact, we would be able to avoid these harmful mistakes we have been suffering from, because of the wrong idea that we make about the woman. They thought of her to be the source of abomination, evil and momentous trials, but the fact is the woman came from the same first person (Adam), with the same nature and pattern on which he was made. Allah (S.W.T) created the woman for a great benefit, He created her to complete the creation of the couple, from which, He has scattered countless men and women.

If we went back to look at history, we can find times when the woman was deprived of all her rights, that time has lasted until recent days. But when the people wanted to reconsider the woman's rights they ignored the legislation of Allah (S.W.T.). They made another grave mistake when they gave the woman more than they should, forgetting that she is a human created from another human.

A person who has been created from another person and a part that is a continuation of the other part, are not similar persons, but they are a pair, which completes each other and none of them, can function properly alone. Mankind will keep misunderstanding the role of the woman and suffer from this misunderstanding and pay a high price for it till we return to the facts that Islam has established.

  • The fourth fact: The family is the important base for the human life.

Allah (S.W.T.) wanted the human to start their life on the earth as one family. He created one person (Adam) and from him created his wife (Eve) to form a family, "and from them both He scattered many men and women." If Allah (S.W.T.) wanted he could start the creation by creating countless men and women, then let them be couples to form many families, with no bonds connecting them.

But for certain reasons and wisdom, Allah (S.W.T.) wanted to increase the bonds among mankind. He first started with the bond between Himself and His servants, which is the root of all the bonds, then with the bond between the people who share the same womb. With these two bonds, we can establish the right system for a society for mankind, this is why Islam gave a big concern for taking care of the family, strengthening its bonds and defending it from all what may effect it.

  • The fifth fact: Mankind can not prosper without taqwa (fearing) of Allah their Creator.

This is why we see this verse emphasize the necessity of taqwa (fearing) of Allah (S.W.T.) in its beginning as well as its end. Mankind will not prosper with these systems and laws that do not rely on fearing Allah (S.W.T.) regardless of its precision or perfectibility.

Even the Islamic law can not be applied correctly while people do not fear Allah, this is why we see the command of taqwa-Allah has been repeated many times in the Glorious Qur'an and the Ahadith of the Messenger Muhammad (S.A.W.). All that was to emphasize the base which mankind can not deny while they are looking for a real civilization and happiness.
