Congregational or Jam’a Salah Pointers:

The lecture before Friday prayer is called a Khutbah. During a Khutbah silence needs to be observed. One should even abstain from replying verbally to salaam.

Salah in Jam’a always has an Imam or prayer leader. This person is responsible for the proper performance of the Salah of the group. A person who prays behind the Imam is called a Muqtadi or follower.

The Imam is the sutra for the prayer; therefore it is perfectly all right to walk between the lines.

It is also recommended to pick up a crying child and sooth him/her and not disturb the jam’a. You can join the prayer once the child calms down.

The Blessed Prophet Muhammad personally taught us how to line up properly. He pbuh said that the “best rows for men are in the first rows and the best rows for women are in the last rows.”

If a congregation is made up entirely of women, then one of the women will act as the Imam and stand in the middle of the first row of women.

The lines should be filled towards the Imam or the center whether you come from the right or the left.

There should be no gaps in any rows as the Blessed Prophet pbuh once warned that Shaytan would creep in between our gaps.
